History of Highgate Park

Highgate Park was opened in 1875. It was the last inner City park to open, until Eastside City Park in 2012.

Prior to becoming a Park, the land, originally owned by Elizabeth Hollier, was used for grazing.

In her Will, Elizabeth Hollier stated that the land was to be used for charity and the four fields were rented out to 12 poor people from Aston Parish and 12 from Birmingham Parish.

In 1875, the Trustees of Elizabeth Hollier's Charity wanted to develop the land for use by industry, but the Birmingham Corporation stepped in and bought the land.

There used to be a Park Lodge in Highgate Park which was built in 1876. After a fire in 2018, it was demolished.

The statue of King Edward VII was in Highgate Park from 1951 but it was removed from the park in 2009, and was eventually installed in Centenary Square (near Baskerville House) near the end of 2010.
